Cloudy pool water is one of the most common problems for Cyprus pool owners. Learn the causes and how to fix it fast with expert advice from Pool Pro Paphos.
Why Pool Water Goes Cloudy in Cyprus
Cloudy water is frustrating but almost always fixable. The key is identifying the correct cause — treating the wrong issue wastes time and money.
The Most Common Causes
1. Low or Absent Chlorine
The number one cause. Without adequate chlorine, bacteria and micro-particles are not being killed or coagulated. Test first — if chlorine is below 0.5 ppm, shock the pool.
2. pH Out of Range
High pH (above 7.8) makes chlorine almost inactive. Cyprus's tap water and hard water naturally push pH upward. Bring it down to 7.2–7.4 before doing anything else.
3. Poor Filtration
If your pump isn't running enough hours, or your filter media is old and exhausted, particles aren't being removed. In summer Paphos, 8–10 hours of filtration per day is the minimum.
4. High Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Over several years, dissolved minerals accumulate. When TDS gets too high, water becomes permanently cloudy. The only fix is a partial or full water change.
5. Algae Starting
Early-stage algae before it turns green can cause cloudiness. Shock treatment is the solution.
6. Post-Party / High Bather Load
A lot of swimmers introduce oils, sunscreen, and organic matter. Follow every pool party with a shock dose.
Quick Fix Checklist
- Test water — identify pH and chlorine levels
- Adjust pH to 7.2
- Shock with chlorine
- Run pump 24 hours
- Add a clarifier if still cloudy after 24 hours
- Backwash filter
