Pool safety in Cyprus is a legal and moral responsibility. Learn about local regulations, fencing requirements, and best practices from Pool Pro Paphos.
Pool Safety Laws in Cyprus
Cyprus law requires that private swimming pools accessible to children must have adequate safety barriers. For rental properties and holiday villas, insurance policies typically mandate specific safety measures. Failure to comply can invalidate your insurance and create serious legal liability.
Required Safety Barriers
Pool Fencing
A fence at least 1.2 metres high with a self-closing, self-latching gate is the standard requirement. The fence should prevent children from reaching through or climbing under.
Pool Alarm
An underwater alarm that sounds when something enters the water is an effective additional safety layer, particularly for residential pools where young children are present.
Safety Cover
For rental properties in particular, a rigid safety cover that can bear weight provides an additional barrier when the pool isn't in use.
Chemical Safety
- Test water before every swimming session during busy periods
- Never allow swimming if chlorine is below 0.5 ppm
- Ensure pH is within 7.0–7.8 range before swimming
- Post a 'No Swimming' sign after shock treatment — wait at least 4 hours
Electrical Safety
- Have all pool electrical installations checked annually by a qualified electrician
- Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) must be installed on all pool-related circuits
- Never use standard household extension leads near the pool
Emergency Preparedness
- Keep a throwing ring (life ring) accessible at the pool
- Ensure all family members know where to find it
- Emergency services: 112
