Pool chemicals are effective but dangerous if mishandled. Learn how to safely store and use pool chemicals in the hot Cyprus climate.
The Risks Are Real
Every year in Cyprus, pool chemical accidents occur — most are entirely preventable. Chlorine gas exposure, chemical burns, and dangerous reactions from mixing incompatible products are the most common incidents.
Safe Storage Rules
Temperature
In Paphos, pool chemical stores can reach 50°C+ in summer. Heat accelerates chemical degradation and increases explosion/fire risk. Store all chemicals in a cool, ventilated area — never in direct sunlight.
Separation
Never store oxidisers (chlorine, shock) near acids (pH down). If they mix accidentally, a violent reaction will result. Keep them in separate, clearly labelled containers.
Dry Storage
Moisture causes chlorine granules to clump and can trigger spontaneous ignition. Always seal containers after use.
Locked Away
Keep chemicals locked away from children and pets at all times.
Safe Handling
- Always add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals
- Add shock to the pool in the evening, not during peak sun
- Never mix different products before adding to the pool
- Wear gloves when handling concentrated acid or chlorine
- Rinse equipment thoroughly after use
Emergency Response
- Skin contact with acid: Flush with large amounts of cold water for 15 minutes
- Inhaled gas: Move to fresh air immediately, call emergency services if symptoms persist
- Emergency services Cyprus: 112
