Woke up to a green pool? Don't panic. Here's the step-by-step guide to fixing algae in your Paphos pool, fast — from our expert team.
Why Pools Turn Green in Cyprus
Algae growth is the most common pool emergency in Paphos. It can happen surprisingly fast — a pool can go from clear to green in as little as 24–48 hours during a hot July day, especially if:
- Chlorine levels have dropped
- The pump has been off for a day or two
- Heavy rain has diluted your chemicals
- A large number of swimmers introduced phosphates
The Green Pool Recovery Process
Step 1: Test Your Water
Before adding anything, test pH, chlorine, and alkalinity. In Cyprus's hard water, pH tends to rise quickly, making chlorine far less effective.
Step 2: Adjust pH First
Bring pH down to 7.2 before shocking. Chlorine at pH 8.0 is 80% less effective than at 7.2. This is a step most DIY attempts skip — and why they fail.
Step 3: Shock the Pool
Use a high-dose chlorine shock — typically 3–5x the normal dose for a severe green pool. Add it in the evening to prevent UV degradation.
Step 4: Run the Pump Continuously
Run your pump 24 hours a day until the water clears. This is non-negotiable.
Step 5: Brush and Vacuum
Brush all surfaces to dislodge algae from walls, steps, and corners. Vacuum to waste (not filter) to remove dead algae.
Step 6: Backwash and Repeat
Backwash your filter thoroughly. You may need to repeat the shock process 2–3 times for a severe green pool.
