Pool stains, calcium scale, and stubborn algae sometimes need an acid wash to fix. Here's when and why Pool Pro recommends acid washing for Paphos pools.
What is Pool Acid Washing?
An acid wash uses a diluted muriatic acid solution to strip a thin layer from the pool's plaster or render surface, removing stains, calcium scale, and embedded algae. It's a powerful but effective reset for a pool that looks permanently dirty.
When Do You Need an Acid Wash?
Severe Calcium Scaling
Cyprus has very hard water, which means calcium carbonate deposits build up rapidly on pool surfaces. Over 3–5 years, this can create rough, white-grey scale that's impossible to brush away.
Black or Green Staining
Algae that's been left untreated long enough embeds into plaster. Chlorine alone won't remove it.
After a Swamp Pool
If a pool has been left without running (perhaps a property stood vacant) and has turned black, an acid wash after draining is often the only practical solution.
Pre-Renovation
Before applying new plaster or paint, an acid wash ensures proper adhesion.
What's Involved
- The pool is fully drained
- Acid is applied section by section, scrubbed, and immediately rinsed away
- The pool is neutralised with soda ash
- Pool is refilled — typically with a water delivery truck in Paphos
- Water chemistry is established from scratch
The whole process takes 1–2 days.
How Often?
For most Paphos pools, an acid wash every 5–7 years keeps surfaces in excellent condition.
