5 Most Common Pool Repairs in Cyprus (And How to Avoid Them)

The 5 Most Common Pool Repairs in Paphos

1. Pump Seal Failure

What happens: Water leaks from around the pump shaft, eventually destroying the motor. Why it happens: Normal wear, exacerbated by running the pump dry (airlocked) or aggressive vibration. Prevention: Never run the pump without water. Have seals inspected annually. Address any unusual sounds immediately.

2. Skimmer Seal Leak

What happens: Water loss of up to 2cm per day. Seen as a wet patch around the skimmer area. Why it happens: Thermal expansion/contraction over years causes the sealant to fail between the skimmer body and pool shell. Prevention: Have skimmer seals inspected every 3–4 years. Re-seal proactively rather than waiting for a leak.

3. Salt Cell Scaling

What happens: Salt chlorinator stops producing chlorine despite correct salt levels. Cell inspection shows calcium buildup. Why it happens: Cyprus's hard water deposits calcium on the cell plates, blocking electrolysis. Prevention: Clean the cell with diluted acid every 3–6 months depending on hardness. Some modern cells have self-cleaning reversal.

4. Filter Valve Failure

What happens: Water bypasses the filter or the backwash valve drips continuously. Why it happens: The multi-port valve spider gasket degrades over time. Prevention: Replace spider gaskets every 4–5 years. Use correct valve lubricant.

5. Underground Pipe Leaks

What happens: Mysterious water loss that doesn't match evaporation rates. Why it happens: Ground movement, tree root intrusion, or pipe joint failure. Prevention: Difficult to prevent entirely, but using quality flexible pipe joints and avoiding planting large trees near pool plumbing helps.
